On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, a lecture “Commonly Perceived Pros and Cons of Arbitration” was held at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade. The speakers included distinguished experts in the field of arbitration:
- Franz Heidinger, LL.M. (Virginia) – Founding Partner of Alix Frank Rechtsanwälte GmbH and Lecturer at the University of Vienna.
- Miloš Živković, PhD – Full Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade and Of Counsel at Živković Samardžić Law Office.
- Ivan Ljubisavljević, LL.M. – Partner at Živković Samardžić Law Office.
The lecture was moderated by Dragor Hiber, PhD – Ret. Full Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade and President of the Arbitration Association of Serbia.
During the lecture, the commonly perceived advantages and disadvantages of arbitration as a dispute resolution mechanism were discussed. Arbitration is often viewed as an effective tool for resolving disputes, with several key advantages, including: (i) Speed – The arbitration process can be faster than court proceedings; (ii) Flexibility – Parties can choose their arbitrators and establish the rules that will apply; (iii) Confidentiality – Arbitration is typically private, allowing for the protection of business secrets. However, there are also certain drawbacks. This lecture provided insight into key aspects of arbitration and opened the floor for discussion on its practical applications.
